- Olive
Olea europaea is a small evergreen tree of the Oleaceae family, that is native to the Mediterranean region. The genus Olea got its name from "elaia", the ancient Greek word for olive, and "oleum", the Latin word for oil. Olive trees share a family with the genus Forsythia, a common ornamental of the north east U.S., Syringa, the genus of lilacs, Fraxinus, ash trees, and Chionanthus, commonly called Fringe Tree. Other notable genera in the family include Ligustrum (privet), and Jasminum. - Holy Basil
In the "Charaka Samhita" the consummate text on Ayurveda written around 1000 BC, Holy Basil is described as "the incomparable one" and is considered to be an incarnation of Tulasi or Vrindavani, a consort of Lord Vishnu. It is considered a symbol of fidelity and helpful in attaining spiritual enlightenment. It has been used to support a healthy response to stress, maintain blood sugar levels within a normal range, promote longevity, nourish the mind and elevate the spirit. - Mullein
The Mullein's plant towering flower stalk with golden yellow flowers can be seen presiding over fields and open spaces throughout most of the world. The common name Mullein is a derivation of the Latin word 'Mollis' which means soft and refers to the texture of the leaves. The plant is native to Europe, the Mediterranean, North Africa and Asia and has been widely naturalized in North America and Australia. The first documented medicinal use can be ascribed to Dioscorides 2000 years ago. - Marshmallow
This plant is native to Europe and parts of Asia and is part of the Malvaceae family. The garden varieties are called HollyHocks. The whole plant contains a tacky, slimy substance known as mucilage, with the root of 2-3 year old plants containing the highest percentage. The root is often dried, sliced into discs, sold and then powdered to support healthy gastrointestinal function where irritation may be present. It has traditionally been used to support all mucosal membranes. - Plantain
Plantain is native to Europe and was brought over by European Colonists to North America in the early 1700s. It is now widely distributed in temperate, moist locales, along roadsides, in fields and pastures, and is commonly found in lawns and gardens. This plant was prominent in the early Anglo-Saxon period where it was highly regarded. Plantain is mentioned in King's American Dispensatory. Plantain has long been known as an "herbal drawing agent". - Elecampane
There are some interesting common names for this plant; Elfwort or Elfdock, Horseheal, Yellow Starwort. This plant is thought to be native to Asia and spread to southern and eastern Europe but has been naturalized in North America and many other parts of the world. It is a fairly large and hearty perennial plant, in the same family as sunflowers and grows up to 8 feet tall with gorgeous and multiple blooms of yellow flowers and a downy underside to it's broad green foliage. - Grindelia
Grindelia is a genus of plants that is native to the Americas and belongs to the family Asteraceae, (Compositae). It is a plant with bright yellow flowers and is indigenous to much of the United States. It is also commonly called gumweed. Native American people utilized remedies made from grindelia to address bronchial problems as well as skin afflictions of all kinds, including reactions to the poison ivy plant. Practitioners in the United States did not recognize the real effectiveness. - Red Root
This plant is native in Canada to Manitoba, south to Nebraska, Texas and South Carolina. It is sometimes called New Jersey Tea because it was used as a substitute for Tea during the American Revolutionary war. It is an especially good landscape plant because of its hardiness and exceptional flowering habits that have also earned it the name Wild Snowball. It can withstand inhospitable conditions due to the presence of massive, woody, deep red colored roots. - Hawthorn
It's probably no coincidence that the earliest records declared the Hawthorn tree a symbol of love. Crataegus species are native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemispheres of Europe and North America. All of the cultures that traditionally used Hawthorn leaves and berries medicinally — including Native American, Chinese and European — employed it as a tonic for the heart. In fact, its use as a cardiac tonic dates as far back as first-century Rome. - Schisandra
The Schisandra plant is sometimes referred to as Chinese Magnolia Vine or Five Flavored Fruit. The five distinct flavors found in the berry correspond to the five phases or Elements of Traditional Chinese Medicine: Sour (Wood), Bitter (Fire), Sweet (Earth), Acrid (Metal) and Salty (Water). Hence it's name Wu Wei Zi in Chinese. It is considered a Harmonizing Tonic or "King" remedy in Chinese Medicine because of its well balanced energetic nature. Other Herbs in this category include.
